ABOUT THE ALBUM

"Nick Vayenas is one of those rare finds. A person who will redefine the role of the trombone not only in small ensemble playing, but also in the way we perceive that instrument in the music community. I'm very proud to say that I've watched him grow. - Terence Blanchard
(Grammy-award winning trumpeter & film scorer)

Trombonist, trumpeter and vocalist Nick Vayenas presents his third release as a leader, Some Other Time, his second album for Whirlwind and follow up to the self titled Nick Vayenas. The album is an eclectic set comprised of four original compositions by Vayenas (which range from multi-metered funk grooves to full on driving rock) and four arranged covers: Michel Legrand ('You Must Believe In Spring'), Leonard Bernstein ('Some Other Time'), Cole Porter ('So In Love') and Oscar Levant ('Blame It On My Youth').

“For my second release on Whirlwind Recordings I wanted a balance of instrumental and vocal, originals and covers,” states Vayenas. “An album that is the most complete personal musical statement I can make. This meant incorporating many different styles as I am a big fan of all kinds of music. For the songs with lyrics, I was very specific about choosing ones that meant something to me and arrangements that would help bring out the meaning of the words.”

Some Other Time features special guest guitarist Doug Wamble, pianist Dan Kaufman, alto saxophonist Patrick Cornelius, electric and double bassist Michael Janisch, drummer Rudy Royston and guests Joe Saylor (drums) & Peter Slavov (double bass).

Vayenas adds, “A band that had the versatility to make this album cohesive was a priority. Doug Wamble, Rudy Royston, Michael Janisch and Dan Kaufman are musicians who I have great respect for and feel very honored to have them take part in this project. They have roots in the jazz tradition but are comfortable playing any style of music. Patrick Cornelius also showcases his talents playing on several tunes and co-producing the album.”

PRESS HIGHLIGHTS

"Of its eight tracks, four are Vayenas originals, all instrumental works featuring his masterful trombone (and sometimes trumpet) and most of them uptempo funky affairs that find the leader and his crew toying with the rhythm giddily and with great skill. His chosen players, in particular guitarist Doug Wamble and drummer Rudy Royston, are always right there with him, diving deep into the groove on the instrumental jams and accenting the vocal numbers with effortless élan."
Jazz Times Magazine

"This is a real pendulum swing of an album, metronomically shifting between self-penned, funky instrumentals and more low-key, laidback sung standards. Nick Vayenas demonstrates an easy mastery of both trombone and trumpet... The alternating formula works really nicely - a great mix of pure chops and tender wit."
Jazzwise Magazine

"Nick Vayenas is a multi-talented musician... brilliant playing from all the musicians involved."
The Jazz Mann

"There are a lot of instrumental risks exercised within this record’s arrangements... His music is a varied collection of pumping funky instrumentals and wistful classic ballads... A New York vibe permeates all the tracks which were recorded in Brooklyn."
London Jazz

"The band is hot, with the fabulous Doug Wamble on country-inflected guitar and the impeccable Rudy Royston on drums. Whirlwind main man Michael Janisch propels from the bass, with Dan Kaufman on piano and another Whirlwind recording artist Patrick Cornelius on alto saxophone."
